There is a proverb that has echoed across the Tibetan plateau for generations: Where there is no yak, there is no Tibetan. Where there are Tibetans, there are yaks.

For centuries, the yak has given the nomadic people of Tibet nearly everything required to survive at altitudes — milk and meat, wool spun into tents and clothing, dung burned as fuel when there was no wood for hundreds of miles, and a back broad enough to carry a family's entire life across the plateau, season after season.
