Yamdrok

There is a lake in Tibet that travelers describe the same way, every time, without having spoken to each other first.

Yamdrok sits at 4,400 meters above the world — vast, still, and colored in a shade that has no adequate name in any language. It is the blue of deep water and open sky held together. It is the color that Tibetan artisans have spent centuries trying to capture in stone — because to carry that color close to the body was always, in some sense, to carry the lake itself.
